Final Stop Motion Animation
BRIEF SUMMARY
Students are required to use the 12 principles of animation to bring their individual puppets, sets, and supporting pieces to life for this stop-motion animation project. The objective is to produce a 20–30 second narratively focused scene that highlights a character's moment of movement. Students are encouraged to explore, subvert, or highlight character features inside their built habitats, building on the character development from a prior project. It emphasises the use of a tripod, good lighting, a backdrop, and the Stop Motion Studio programme. The process work, concept, design, and finished animation are all included in the evaluation criteria. With checkpoints for storyboarding, character portraits, rough animation, and final animation presentations, the project takes place over multiple consultation days.
RATIONALE
In this kinetic typography animation loop, I leveraged the character Jaco, a stubborn and
clumsy yet warmhearted Afrikaans man, and a dual-sided set design featuring a modern-day art gallery and an alien space gallery. The animation unfolds with Jaco strolling through the modern gallery, accompanied by classical music as the lights gradually dim. His weariness is evident as he yawns, foreshadowing the narrative. Jaco falls asleep on a bench, transitioning to the contrasting alien gallery, bathed in blue and purple hues, creating an eerie atmosphere. Awaking in panic, Jaco frantically searches, addressing an unseen character, "Suzette, is dit jy?" The alien setting intensifies as he discovers he's trapped in an alien display. Alien screams and ominous shadows heighten the tension. The climax reveals Jaco as a human exhibit, echoing the fate of others in the modern gallery. The stark contrast in lighting, colour schemes, and music underscores the shift between the two worlds, emphasising the
narrative's emotional depth.
